On June 27, 2024, the Government of B.C. announced new rebates for those interested in installing solar panels and battery energy storage systems. These rebates are intended to promote sustainable energy choices and reduce electricity costs across the province, while making it more affordable than ever before for homeowners to install renewable energy.

Homeowners in British Columbia can receive rebates from BC Hydro totaling up to $10,000 when they install both a certified solar photovoltaic (PV) system and a battery storage system.  Customers can choose to install a battery energy storage system only or solar panels only or both together.

Here’s What You Need to Know:

Residential single-family homes:

Solar Panel Rebates:

Rebate Amount: Up to $5,000

How it Works: Receive $1,000 per kilowatt (kW) of installed solar photovoltaic system.

Battery Storage Rebates:

Rebate Amount: Up to $5,000

How it Works: Get $500 per kilowatt-hour (kWh) of installed battery energy storage system size.

Qualifying property: detached single family, duplex, triplex, row home or townhome.

 

Multi-unit Residential Buildings, Small and Medium Businesses:

Solar Panel Rebates:

Rebate Amount: Up to $25,000

How it Works: Receive $1,000 per kilowatt (kW) of installed solar photovoltaic system.

Battery Storage Rebates:

Rebate Amount: Up to $25,000

How it Works: Get $500 per kilowatt-hour (kWh) of installed battery energy storage system size.

Qualifying property: multi-unit residential building or strata common area on a single meter, or a commercial business property. This does not apply for installing solar panels to power individual units.

 

Social Housing, Indigenous, and Non-Integrated Areas:

Solar Panel Rebates:

Rebate Amount: Up to $75,000

How it Works: Receive $3,000 per kilowatt (kW) of installed solar photovoltaic system.

Battery Storage Rebates:

Rebate Amount: Up to $75,000

How it Works: Get $1500 per kilowatt-hour (kWh) of installed battery energy storage system size.

Customer must meet one of the following criteria:

  • Is an indigenous governing body.
  • Is a housing society registered under the Societies Act.
  • Is a housing co-operative registered under the Co-operative Act Social Housing.

Please note: All installations and connections must meet specific criteria to qualify:

  • Installations with or without a battery completed after June 27th, 2024, are eligible for the rebate. Net metering (now called “self-generation”) applications must have been submitted on or after May 1st, 2024.
  • Rebate applications for battery only projects installed prior to program launch in late July are not eligible for the retroactive rebate.
  • Systems must be reviewed, approved, and connected to the grid through the self-generation program.

Additional information:

  • Rebates can be stacked with other 3rd party funding providers, such as the Greener Homes Grant or the Greener Homes Loan program, however the total rebate payment when combined with the third-party funding cannot exceed the total project cost.
  • Pre and post energy audit is not required for the BC Hydro rebate.
  • Separate properties and accounts owned by the same person can qualify for a rebate.
