Prepare your roof for Metro Vancouver’s Rainy Season
Expert Tips from Adam Boyes
As the rain returns to the Lower Mainland, it’s essential to ensure your roof can withstand the wet and windy conditions ahead. Our roofing specialist, Adam Boyes, shares expert tips on how to maintain your roof for Vancouver’s rainy season. Whether you have asphalt or cedar shingles, being proactive can save you from costly repairs during the fall and winter months.
Monitor Roof Conditions Before the Rain Hits
Vancouver’s damp climate can take a toll on roofing materials. Regular roof inspections are crucial to staying ahead of potential damage. Adam recommends keeping an eye out for:
- Asphalt Shingles: If your roof is 15 to 17 years old, it may be approaching the end of its lifespan. Look for shingle granules in your gutters—these granules are a sign that shingles are wearing down and need attention. If granules are gone and you see the base layer of the shingles, it’s time to schedule an inspection.
- Cedar Shingles: With age, cedar shakes may crack, slip, or lose ridge caps. If your roof has visible damage or missing pieces, you could face more significant issues down the line.
Clean Gutters and Drainage Areas
During Metro Vancouver’s fall storms, both rain and wind can wreak havoc on your roof. Adam emphasizes the importance of keeping gutters and other drainage areas free from debris:
- After heavy windstorms, clear gutters to prevent blockages. Blocked gutters can cause water to pool, leading to leaks and structural damage.
- Inspect valleys and roof sections near chimneys or skylights for leaves and other debris, which could prevent proper drainage.
- Make sure downspouts are unobstructed to allow water to flow away from your home efficiently.
Check Your Attic and Roof for Warning Signs
Don’t forget to inspect the inside of your home! During fall, take a look at the underside of your roof from the attic. If you notice any damp spots on the plywood or signs of moisture buildup, it could indicate a roofing issue that needs immediate attention.
If it’s safe to do so, inspect your roof for:
- Cracks, holes, or missing shingles
- Blocked drainage points
- Damage to roof protrusions like chimneys or skylights
